The Board shall transport students as required by Wisconsin Statutes. Due to the hazardous location of the schools, transportation is provided to all K – 8 students. Student transportation for the regular school day shall be by contract carrier or by the parent or guardian.

Generally, students should be transported by commercial carrier. When a commercial carrier is not available or practical, students may be transported with signed parent/guardian permission by District employees or other adults in private vehicles. Written approval of the District Administrator or his/her designee is required for such transportation in compliance with the terms of this policy and state law.

Parent contracts may be offered in lieu of transportation at the current I.R.S. rate per mile and in accordance with Wisconsin statutes. The Board may elect to contract for such transportation for Special Education students or other special circumstances. The contract accompanying this policy is to be used for this purpose. In accordance with Wisconsin Statutes the vehicle shall be properly registered, the operator in possession of a valid operator’s license and insured to provide liability and medical coverage for the vehicle, operator and passengers. A criminal background check will be required of any driver not transporting their own child unless waived by the parent or legal guardian of the child in question.

Prior to the use of a privately owned vehicle for transporting students by parent contract or employee or other adult operation, the owner of the vehicle must provide a copy of currently effective insurance policy coverage for District records verifying property damage coverage with a limit of not less than $10,000 and bodily injury coverage with limits not less than $25,000 for each person, and, subject to the limit for each person, a total limit of not less than $50,000 for each accident.

Privately owned vehicles used for transportation must be properly licensed.

The vehicle operator shall meet the following requirements:

The driver shall observe all traffic rules.

The vehicle may not be used to transport more persons than can be seated. The vehicle must meet all current state and federal regulations for transporting individuals.
